Sometimes called “oblong” or “rectangular”, long faces are longer than they are wide. To avoid your face looking even longer, men with oblong faces should try short haircuts on top, such as a crew or buzz cuts. However, if you want more volume on top, skip the short fade on the sides and you can style your hair with a side part, comb over, or short brush up/spiky hair. Whether you want a classic or modern look, the comb over haircut remains a cool option. Versatile yet easy to get and style, the comb over fade practically styles itself along the part in your hair.
Textured Spiky Hair with Skin Fade and Line Up
A strong-hold pomade and gentle brush back should keep any hair on top in place when you’re up to bat. The hockey flow is a trendy long hairstyle for guys who want to show off their texture and volume with extra length in the back. Popular with hockey players, the layered style features shorter sides and a longer flowing back, offering a casually cool and relaxed vibe.
Wavy Brushed Up Hair and High Razor Fade
Pictured above is an example of one of the best hairstyles for men with wavy hair. With a fade or undercut on the sides and short cropped hair on top, guys should tousle this look with pomade to get excellent movement and flow. This textured crop top is all about the perfect edges, which gives it a clean-cut, modern look.

It’s important to note that many brands use the word “pomade” to simply mean “product” these days. So if you see a “clay pomade” or a “wax pomade,” it’s going to carry far more qualities of the first word—if it carries any pomade qualities at all. A sleek hard side part is one part glamorous and chic to one part boyish and charming. Letting a few strands of hair fall forward over the forehead adds just a touch of boldness, and a low taper subtly freshens things up. It’s a contemporary take on a timeless classic that looks fantastic on almost anyone. Volume is in, and if you’re trying to give your hair some serious lift, a blow dryer will be your best friend.
Medium Comb Over and Low Taper Fade
If you have thick, wavy hair, it may seem as if your hairstyle options are numbered. Fortunately, you can easily get the side-swept look that is professional, trendy and relatively easy to get. All you need is a moderate hold and shine pomade to coax hair into place with a brush. This faux hawk is more classic than others, but it still foregoes the sharp, shiny spikes for something slightly more textured and natural. The buzzed sides truly set the style off, making it easy to do at home with some high-hold matte wax and a natural-bristle brush. A high side part is the perfect way to bring a bit of professionalism into your style.
Very Short Haircuts
Adding a high razor fade to a classic buzz makes it sophisticated, refined and classy. A clean-shaven face makes it more youthful while a full beard or stubble makes you look irresistible. The short buzz fade is a military-inspired haircut for guys who want a low-maintenance and effortless style. Easy to get and simple to style, this cropped cut looks amazing the second you roll out of bed in the morning.
Short Blowout with Tapered Sides
Taking into account not only your genetics, but also lifestyle factors that could be contributing to hair loss, they provide a well-rounded approach that other similar companies don’t. There’s the classic minoxidil serum, but also medicated shampoo and hair supporting supplements using natural ingredients. Used together, they can address multiple hair loss factors, which a single product usually can’t. You can also add more products to your kit as needed or buy them individually.
You can massage a small dab of cream in your fingers and then dust it over any flyaways. For longer hair, it’s often comparable to hair oil, but provides less shine. Fiber is great for all hair types, but it is one of the best men’s products for thick hair especially; apply it to dry hair and it’ll texturize while locking everything into place.

Bars with lightweight ingredients including jojoba oil will be better for people with fine hair or straight textures. You’ll want to consider shampoo bars that have natural oils, including coconut and argan oil, and other moisturizing ingredients like glycerin and aloe vera, says Jordan. Also, look for options that use gentle surfactants rather than sulfates to cleanse the hair to TK. Some gentle options include apple cider vinegar and sodium cocoyl isethionate, according to experts in our guide to clarifying shampoos. Visit one of our hair stylists and walk out of the salon feeling fresh with a new hair cut, color or style.
Vintage and traditional, the Ivy League haircut is another go-to style that any guy can pull off without complicated instructions or an army of styling products. The distinctive features of this cut include short hair parted to the side with faded sides. For a more conservative finish, choose a low taper fade; otherwise, a high skin fade can offer tons of contrast. For a classic men’s haircut that is bound to impress in professional business settings or social events, the Ivy League is a good choice.
This gentleman’s cut comes with a conservative mid fade on the sides and textured hair brushed all to one side. To get a good side part, you’ll want to use a low shine or matte hair product. The taper cut is both versatile and trendy, and what makes tapered hair unique is that your sides are not buzzed with clippers, like a fade, but instead scissor cut for a longer look. While the look still gets gradually shorter towards the bottom of the head, a tapered haircut doesn’t provide the same contrast as a fade. As some guys start to prefer longer styles, this cut is set to be one of the most popular of the year. Not all men are fans of high volume styles, making the crop fade with a fringe a great choice.
The good news is that there are plenty of treatments out there that are proven to work. The last hair loss treatment is the CapillusRx laser cap, although it’s only available through a physicians’ office. Choosing products that enhance your texture is the first step to preventing this, says Medico. But instead of asking for a cut, Medico says to ask for the hair to be “shaped.” This is when a hairdresser or barber takes less off the length and more off the front, the sides, and any overgrown areas.

Many people prefer the foam formulation over the liquid version since it's less drippy. Like any minoxidil product, you must keep up use to see and maintain results. "Stopping minoxidil application will lead to a gradual loss in hair that grew due to the minoxidil," Dr. Green says. No matter your needs — from balding to thinning — we consulted experts on their favorite hair growth products for men. That includes hair serums that stimulate growth to men's shampoos made to address hair loss.
High Volume Brush Back with Low Fade
If you have an oblong face shape or a large forehead, adding some long, textured fringe to your ‘do is a fantastic way to balance your features. As an example, you could start with a classic French crop, let your fringe grow out, and use some pomade to create a choppy, textured look. The buzz cut is the most low-maintenance haircut of them all, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring or tasteless.
How we chose the best hair growth products for men
Round faces are about equal in length and width, and the jawline offers no sharp corners or defining edges. To create the illusion that the face is longer, consider hairstyles that are short on the sides but add height or volume. Because your head shape can influence how different cuts and styles looks on you, it only makes sense to know what face shapes and hairstyles are compatible.
This voluminous modern haircut will make you look younger and is relatively easy to style. The angular touch brands the look awesome compared to just a classic slick back. This never-out-of-fashion slicked back undercut is a breeze to style and looks best with a full beard. And since ruffled hair is the latest craze in barbershops, the messier the hairstyle, the better.
Hairdressing with a classic history.
Instead of a traditional slick back, the styling has been brushed back to offer volume and movement. The low skin fade creates contrast with the longer, textured top and the beard adds some facial hair for a manly touch. This haircut for men features a clean bald fade on the sides and back with thick curly hair on top. The curly hair fade is one of the best styles these days because it takes advantage of the unique texture curls have to offer. A buzz cut fade continues to be a barbershop favorite because it is easy to get and simple to style.

Messy Curly Hair Fade
Just remember that hair grows in three- to six-month cycles, so it will probably take months to notice a real difference even if a product is working. But, these picks sourced from scalp professionals and our very own staffers will get the ball rolling for the long game. Telogen effluvium is hair loss caused by high stress, surgeries or other internal issues like thyroid problems or vitamin D deficiency.
To style the pompadour, you’ll need a strong hair product, blow dryer, and comb. Once you get the general shape of your pomp, blow dry to apply heat and keep the shape you’ve styled. Another example of messy, spiky hair combines a little bit of quiff with a whole lot of texture. The swept-up length in the front perfectly offsets the incredible spiky texture on top, which pairs nicely with the tapered fade on the sides and back. To style, just use your fingertips and a matte pomade to create the texture and use a natural-bristle brush to brush up the hair in front. A skin fade comb over is one of the bolder styles you can choose, especially for guys with longer hair.
It is not known how many people get the drug for hair loss on a private prescription but some clinics have reported an increase. It is only licensed by the MHRA for hair loss in 18 to 41-year-olds, and the treatment of enlarged prostates. On the whole, it’s important that you speak with your doctor about any symptoms you’re experiencing. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis, and select a personalized treatment that will help restore health to you hair and scalp. Baldness is often hereditary, and is activated by a shift in your hormones.
Hailing from the Bay area, Daniel Alfonso started cutting hair in his parent’s garage and immediately gained a loyal following among his friends. Knowing that this was his true calling, he pursued a career in hair dressing. After earning a full cosmetology license, he discovered that his true niche was in men’s hair styling. Though many people refer to him as a "barber", Daniel’s skills and pedigree classify him as a true men’s hair stylist. He soon evolved into an expert in the field of social marketing skilled in all aspects of men’s grooming and style. Unlike a longer fro, this shorter version doesn’t require your curls be super tight and compact.
Understanding the underlying cause of your hair loss is absolutely necessary in determining the best approach to halt and reverse any further damage to your hair and scalp. A smooth flow with an off-center part makes the most of fine hair by creating the illusion of ample volume. The choppy ends contrast sharply with the silky, straight hair in the front. It is waterproof, which means you can use it in the shower and it’s easy to clean. What we like most about it, apart from the cutting capabilities, is that the small design makes it ideal for travel and barely takes up any room in your dopp kit. These days, you can even use some ear hair trimmers for way more than your ears.
Nevertheless, what makes these places so unique from what you can find at other poke chains is the attention and the quality that goes into the fish. At Seasalt Poke in Santa Monica, the owner, who is also a chef, wakes up at ungodly hours of the morning to pick up the freshest fish. Another impetus that led me to write about poke is that most LA poke guides on Google are at least four years old. My extensive search for the best poke bowls doesn’t stop in LA County.

I did not pay for the poke bowls, but this is my honest unbiased review. This place was my first introduction to real Hawaiian poke and it was a complete game-changer. My first visit was in early 2017, way before my very first trip to Hawaii. A girl I went to school with, who lived in Redondo Beach, couldn’t stop raving about this place. My first time there, I remember being shocked at my complete lack of agency in choosing my toppings, but I was also pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was.

The menu is split between the Chef’s menu, which you cannot modify because these are made with his special recipe, and the build-your-own option. If you’re having doubts, you can ask him questions and let him know your sauce and fish preferences. If you’re the kind of person who likes onions but prefers not to have stinky onion breath for the rest of the day, their special crispy onions won’t linger in your mouth afterwards. Hands-down, my all-time favorite poke style is their California roll. Also, just like in Hawaii, you can buy the poke by the pound and the fish is seasoned to perfection.
Mainland Poke Shop
I just succumbed to the greatness of the bowl that made me feel like I was in poke heaven. If I could eat just one thing for the rest of my life, it would be Poke. This Hawaiian dish has been served for centuries but it reached its popularity on the mainland in 2015. That year, the poke trend was at its full peak in Southern California and became a huge Instagram food sensation.
Where To Find The Best Poke In Los Angeles, Orange County And San Diego
By doing this, the color of the fish is altered and people can’t tell. Many customers that walk in confuse it with Poke Bar and are dumbstruck when they find out Sea Salt is a different beast. However, I drove by last summer and I remember seeing a huge line for Poke Pola, which is smack dab in the middle of 2nd Street. But since they didn’t do poke Hawaiian-style, I completely overlooked it. Then one Sunday when I happened to be in the area craving poke, instead of heading over to Hawaiian-poke joints in Long Beach like Poke More, I went ahead and finally tried Poke Pola.

I also included places in Orange County and San Diego County. As my search for Hawaiian-style poke joints in Southern California deepened, I kept coming across more places that were the perfect excuse to go on a jaunt. If you had told me that San Diego county is a hub for fresh fish and amazing poke a month ago, I would have looked at you in utter disbelief.

What I love about this place is that they really emphasize the quality of the fish they serve. Lines have been long since day one for this Santa Monica poké shop, which skews a bit more gourmet than the rest and has prices to match. When I walked in, the first thing that struck me was how the employee was grinding the lettuce, which is always a great sign that the ingredients are fresh. I wasn’t that hungry so I ordered the kid’s size bowl, which gives you the option to pick one protein and three toppings of your choice.

The sauces are the star of the show, so ask him questions if you’re curious! You will not find these array of sauces anywhere else, like the Leche De Tigre sauce, inspired by the famous traditional marinade used in Peruvian ceviche. Chef Rassallat’s creativity combined with his years of expertise and knowledge of ingredients make this place like no other. I couldn’t believe this hole-in-the-wall poke joint was only 20 minutes away from Newport Beach!
Coincidentally, I moved here in 2015 and throughout the following years, I have seen poke joints pop up in almost every LA neighborhood like cold pressed juice bars. 2 fishes, a scoop of crab salad and 3 toppings is under $10 at Poke N Roll, making it one of the cheapest of the new crop of poke places. But what they lack in fish quality they make up for with unique cooked options like kara-age and tempura plus a wide array of one-of-a-kind sauces like soy mustard and honey miso. Quinoa and kale also make an appearance at this West Hollywood shop, but unlike some of the others this poke is pre-mixed so there's no getting rid of it. Each order comes with one side (edamame, seaweed salad, spicy edamame or cucumber salad) and for extra $$ you can get add ons like chia, mango and blueberry (when in season), and crispy garlic. I like Kawamata Seafood better than Bear Flag because the poke bowl is served Hawaiian-style and it has an undeniable, more authentic, no-frills vibe that is ever-present at Hawaiian poke places.
Living in Southern California comes with the perks of having a plethora of poke places to choose from. While certainly you won’t get the same eating experience as if you were in Hawaii, luckily there are a few places that are pretty close to it. I was completely surprised by his vehement enthusiasm and outstanding customer service skills with everyone that walked in, especially the regulars. One man who was also dining in said he drove all the way from Newport Beach just for this poke!
It’s totally worth the drive on a weekend to enjoy the beauty of San Juan Capistrano or Dana Point afterwards. I am stunned by the fact that by searching “The Best Poke in Orange County” on Google, only one blog so far mentions Kawamata. At Kawamata Seafood, the seating, just like in Hawaii, is very limited. Despite this, you can enjoy your poke at Capistrano Beach Park, which is a 3-minute drive away from Kawamata and enjoy your poke with this view. Become part of our community to experience a bowl free every 10th and lots of benefits.
If you want to venture further down the I-5 freeway for a one-day road trip, these are the places you have to go for a fresh, mouthwatering poke bowl. I guess it makes sense since a few of the most famous surf spots in California are located in North County San Diego. I did a very thorough review of Bear Flag in my post “The best restaurants and Coffee shops in Orange County”. I ordered their poke salmon to-go from their Newport Beach location and the quality of the fish was beyond my expectations. For every strip mall in Orange County, there is at least one poke bar. An indicator that a place is good is when you can see the fresh fish on display, and that’s one of the main reasons Bear Flag won me over.
Or you can take charge and build your own combo from jarred toppings like crispy onions and furikake. The salmon was pure freshness and the sauce was deliciously tangy. The onions had the perfect crispiness and did not overpower the rest of the ingredients. The seaweed and the cucumber did an exceptional job in balancing out the bowl.
WASHINGTON — The 118th United States Congress began its session on Jan. 3, 2023. In the 2022 midterm elections, the Democrats retained control of the Senate. Democrats have had the majority in the Senate since the 117th Congress. In fact, I’d go one step further and argue that they’re the glue that holds Freedom Caucus and the conservative establishment together, as this wing won’t broker all that much with Democrats and/or the more moderate GOP House members. Part of getting to a position of leadership in the first place is moderating your views so that a larger swath of members think you’ll prioritize their interests. In practice, that could mean pushing a fairly traditional Republican agenda, like cutting taxes or entitlements, without wading too much into the culture wars that have animated the furthest right House members. Instead, I’d argue that a number of important fissures define the current House congressional GOP — and the embrace of Trump and Trumpism is just one of them.
U.S. House races with two incumbents, 2022
This article summarizes congressional and state legislative actions in each state in the 2020 cycle. House race in 2022 was in Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, where Lauren Boebert (R) defeated Adam Frisch (D) by a margin of 0.17%, or 546 votes out of more than 300,000 cast. In that race, Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) defeated Rita Hart (D) by a margin of 6 votes out of nearly 400,000 cast, the narrowest margin of victory in any U.S. Broken down by the winner's party, the average MOV was 28.4 percentage points for Democrats and 29.3 percentage points for Republicans.
“It seems like they’re increasingly becoming an incredibly endangered species,” said Julia Azari, a FiveThirtyEight contributor and political science professor at Marquette University. On Tuesday evening, Mr. Biden signed into law the Duck Stamp Modernization Act of 2023, which allows waterfowl hunters the use of electronic federal duck stamps instead of physical ones to meet licensing requirements. In 2023, the Republican-led House has passed only 27 bills that became law, despite holding a total of 724 votes. Sometime in 2023, lawmakers will have to raise the debt ceiling, the amount that the US is able to borrow, with the potential for economic collapse if they fail to do so. Historically, Republicans have been more willing to risk a default on the debt ceiling, using Democrats’ fear of financial catastrophe to extract spending cuts.

Hard-line Republicans intent on attacking the Biden administration see Mr. Mayorkas as the face of failures at the border. Among them are the 20 Republicans who repeatedly voted against Mr. McCarthy for speaker, viewing him as insufficiently conservative and too cozy with the Washington establishment. The tumult that broke out last month during the election of Kevin McCarthy for speaker illustrated the potential for profound dysfunction in the new House Republican majority. And the spectacle created by Republican lawmakers at the State of the Union address showed the unruly behavior of some in the G.O.P. rank and file that is becoming a new normal.
May Day and Gaza protests sweeping the Bay Area Wednesday
Republicans have already signaled a willingness to employ this strategy again, with McCarthy noting ahead of the midterms that there would be some requests made in exchange for GOP support. Beyond judicial nominees, there are a lot of policies that Democrats were not able to get through by the end of the year that they could try to keep on pushing in the new term. One such proposal is a bill that would enable banks to work with marijuana retailers in states where weed has been legalized. That legislation was among those that lawmakers tried to squeeze into year-end spending legislation, though it was blocked by Republican leaders. Other issues that House Republicans have cited as key investigatory targets include the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Attorney General Merrick Garland’s handling of the Justice Department, and the business dealings of Biden’s son Hunter Biden. Congress is limited in how it can follow through on investigations as lawmakers are unable to bring criminal charges, but they, as Democratic lawmakers recently did with former President Donald Trump, can recommend the Department of Justice bring charges.
In addition to the competitiveness data above, a race may be particularly compelling or meaningful to the balance of power in governments for other reasons. The following map displays the 2022 House battlegrounds shaded by the incumbent's or most recent incumbent's political affiliation. Ballotpedia's Annual Congressional Competitiveness report for 2022 includes information on the number of elections featuring candidates from both major parties, the number of open seats, and more. This section does not include vacant seats filled by special election before November 8, 2022, unless no incumbents appeared on the regular primary ballot for that seat. Use the interactive below to explore how members voted in 2023, and how their voting records aligned (or didn’t align) with their caucus memberships.
Up next, we’re likely to see debates over things like whether Democrats should be allowed to have committee seats, whether McCarthy should negotiate with Biden and Democrats over raising the debt ceiling and much more. Members of this group support Trump, too, but their loyalties aren’t tied to a specific leader. And they often strategically show their support for the former president (i.e., vociferously defending him during impeachment hearings), since they arguably also want to increase their power in the House.
The U.S. House of Representatives has chosen the winner of a presidential election on two occasions—1800 and 1824. Besides the representative from each state, there are a small number of delegates and a resident commission. There are several important leadership positions in the House of Representatives. The White House began making plans months ago for an onslaught of Republican investigations, hiring Richard A. Sauber, a white-collar defense lawyer, as “special counsel to the president” to oversee the response to subpoenas and other oversight efforts.
There were three special elections to the United States House of Representatives in 2023 during the 118th United States Congress. In fact, I’d argue that Greene, at least as of late, is trying to teeter between this category and the far-right establishment (or, at least, I think that’s where she wants to be). This tension was on full display during the House speaker vote, when she publicly chastised ideologically aligned members (like Boebert) for refusing to back McCarthy’s bid.
When candidates from only one of either the Democratic or Republican parties run for a U.S. House seat, the seat is all but guaranteed to be won by that party. House was 28.9 percentage points, the second smallest margin since 2012, and up slightly from 28.8 percentage points in 2020. Click on the different vote types in the chart to the left to learn more about what votes are included in each category. Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia channeled her frustration with this situation in a post on X, writing that GOP voters "didn't give us the majority to crash the ship."
The list of this year’s accomplishments is less ambitious and more bare minimum, such as legislation to suspend the debt ceiling and set federal spending limits that helped pull the nation back from the brink of economic catastrophe. The tally also includes two temporary spending measures to avoid government shutdowns. The House cleared the must-pass annual military policy bill last week before leaving for the year, though it is not known when President Biden will sign it into law. Republicans have argued that these funds, which would hire tens of thousands more IRS agents, would be used to unfairly target people.
Democrats are likely to add another lawmaker to their ranks after a special election in a deep-blue, Buffalo-area district in late April. And there are also 20 lawmakers who in 2021 bucked Mr. Trump and the rest of the party by voting to impeach him or to form an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Each state gets a different number of representatives based on the total population. California is the nation’s most populous state and has 52 representatives. The Democrats controlled the House from 2019 until 2023 when Republicans overtook their majority in the most recent midterm elections. Of the 435 voting seats in the House, 219 are held by Republicans.
One of the most impactful things the Democrat-controlled Senate can do on its own is to keep on stacking the courts with Democrat-leaning judges, after Republicans did the same for years during the Trump administration. According to progressive group Demand Justice, there are 69 judicial vacancies that do not have a nominee, as of late December, and 44 nominees pending confirmation. “On our very first bill, we’re going to repeal 87,000 IRS agents. Our job is to work for you, not go after you,” McCarthy has said. With a narrow majority in the House, we look ahead to what Republicans can accomplish and what their control of the chamber means for the Biden administration's agenda. Test your knowledge of the average age of members of Congress over time.
Some lawmakers have not been rated because they are new to Congress or have not voted enough. The darker red tone indicates districts where a Republican ousted a Democratic incumbent in the 2020 general election. Those seats went to David Valadao, Young Kim and Michelle Steel, who were all reelected this time around in reconfigured districts.
Democrats have a chance to continue this trend in the new term and expedite some of these confirmations. Many of these bills will likely be stymied in the Senate, and McCarthy may have some difficulty getting these plans through the House, too. His narrow majority could make it tougher for the GOP to stick together depending on whether he’s able to get the most conservative and moderate parts of the caucus onboard. Doing so could prove particularly difficult with more contentious strategies, like impeachment of different officials.
Rhode Island's 1st congressional district
Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who worked hard over the years to establish his loyalty to Trump, was suddenly being called a “moderate” as he suffered through more than a dozen unsuccessful votes for House speaker. The defectors who initially refused to vote for him were now part of the “hardline” or “extremist” faction of the party — depending on which news article you read. That group also included Trump boosters who nevertheless said when it came to the speaker vote, the former president should be taking cues from them. The farm bill, which conservative lawmakers have also withheld support for in the past, is a third chance for House lawmakers to extract concessions. Legislation that Congress has to renew roughly every five years, the farm bill authorizes many of the Agriculture Department’s programs, including SNAP.
Moderate establishment
Ms. Hageman was appointed by Mr. McCarthy to the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which will focus on finding evidence that the government has silenced and punished conservatives. One of five newcomers who opposed Mr. McCarthy’s speaker bid, Representative Anna Paulina Luna, took over a seat previously held by a Democrat, Charlie Crist, who ran against (and lost to) Ron DeSantis for Florida governor. Ms. Luna has explicitly said the 2020 election was stolen and has joined the House Freedom Caucus. Many lawmakers who were leading a chorus of boos and heckling were familiar faces from the far right, including some who are poised to wield real power in the 118th Congress. The defining dynamic for House Republicans, who have a four-vote majority, may be the push and pull between the far right and the rest of the Republican conference. In the 118th Congress which runs through Jan. 3, 2025, Republicans have majority control of the House of Representatives.

The seat previously occupied by former Representative George Santos, Republican of New York, who was expelled in November, is the Democrats' best chance at flipping a district in their push to reclaim control of the House. Court-ordered redistricting may offer Democrats even more of an edge to win the swing district seat in November. Republicans see the departure of Representative Elissa Slotkin, Democrat of Michigan, who is leaving her seat to run for the Senate, as one of their biggest chances to claim a Democratic seat and increase their odds of keeping a majority in November. Some lawmakers are leaving after serving in Congress for decades, while a number of others have come more recently. Many in both categories have cited frustration saying rancor and dysfunction have gripped the institution in recent years. Rachel Brosnahan of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel fame will join CNN's entourage on Saturday, April 27, as she prepares to enter the DC Comics Universe with her starring role as journalist Lois Lane in the 2025 Superman reboot.
Additionally, experts say this Congress is more polarized than in the past, so Republicans cannot count on Democrats to cross party lines on partisan votes. “When you have so few votes to spare, you really have to be just a nut about getting that whip count right and making sure you know where every single vote is coming from,” Leavitt said. But if two Republicans are absent, and only 18 total votes are cast, Republicans no longer have a majority; they need a Democrat to join them to secure a majority. Imagine a House that is composed of only 20 lawmakers, let’s say 11 Republicans and 9 Democrats.
Mr. Ogles also opposed Mr. McCarthy’s speaker bid and has explicitly said the 2020 election was stolen. Across the ideological spectrum are 119 of the 139 representatives who objected to certifying the 2020 Electoral College results, including all but one member of the House G.O.P. leadership team. Some far-right lawmakers and those who have embraced conspiracy theories have landed seats on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, the main investigative organ in the House. They will be in a position to shape inquiries into the Biden administration and other issues. More than 50 representatives have cosponsored articles of impeachment against Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, so far this session.
In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. The U.S. government has not publicly provided evidence that shows TikTok shared U.S. user data with the Chinese government or tinkered with the company’s popular algorithm, which influences what Americans see. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades.

The table below includes election results for districts that were open at the time the state held its congressional primary. For a list of seats that opened up as a result of an incumbent losing re-election in a primary, see the following section. While Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) has changed her party affiliation to independent, she’s said she does not intend to caucus with Republicans, meaning Democrats will likely be able to hold committee majorities in the new term. Having this majority could help Democrats more quickly move judges even in the case of tie committee votes. The Senate’s current split has meant tie votes have required a special, more time-consuming procedure to advance to the floor.
Her husband, Peter Neal, interned at the White House during the Obama administration, and contributed to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. The following map shows each state with a Republican battleground primary for U.S. The following map shows each state with a Democratic battleground primary for U.S.
That did not happen once under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who led the House for a total of eight years, or under the previous two Republican speakers, Paul D. Ryan or John A. Boehner. The mismatch between the number of votes taken and the number of laws passed is something far-right House Republicans might consider a win. One of the demands the faction made of Mr. McCarthy in January as they were withholding their support to make him speaker was to open up the legislative process and allow more votes on the floor. Beyond these investigations, McCarthy has laid out a legislative agenda called the “Commitment to America,” which sets up four pillars the party will focus on, including the economy, safety, individual freedom, and government accountability. Policies that are part of this proposal include everything from retention and recruitment bonuses for law enforcement to a parent’s bill of rights that supports feedback on school curriculums.
Guests can walk through a series of rotating, state-of-the-art exhibitions, including a hall that pays tribute to 100 notable American writers and an area where anyone can sit behind a typewriter and contribute to a story created by museum attendees. Packed with exhibits that allow you to step inside a simulated tornado or navigate a maze lined with mirrors, the Museum of Science and Industry has no shortage of interactive bells and whistles that will appeal to younger and older visitors alike. Even if you graduated high school decades ago, displays featuring a restored U-505 German submarine, a simulated coal mine and a recreation of a Chicago street circa 1910 might make you feel like you're on a school field trip again—but a good one, and with a better lunch! Keep in mind that you're walking through a building that was originally created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Originally founded to house the biological and anthropological collections assembled for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, this massive natural history museum still packs ’em in with more than 20 permanent exhibitions covering 480,000 square feet.

The firm is an amazing team of designers, technologists and strategists that bring ideas to life in impactful ways. Their clear passion for design, design history, Chicago and its culture made them an ideal partner for this project. This, combined with Jamie’s co-founder Steven Ryan’s collaborative design prowess, resulted in a memorable and meaningful visual identity that fully embodies DMoC. Formerly the Chicago Design Museum, the organization was founded in 2012 as an entirely volunteer-run organization that planned and executed pop-up exhibitions.

Founded by Stephanie and Bill Sick Professor of Fashion, Body and Garment Nick Cave and his partner Bob Faust, it’s home to their studio, residence, and businesses while also acting as a creative incubator and exhibition space. In its defying of categorization, it encourages artists who use the space not to box themselves into one discipline. “We named the building Facility, which clearly has that connotation to the old art-world Andy Warhol idea, but more importantly calling it Facility, we were talking about its role as facilitating others,” Cave shared with Newcity last year. We are so excited to take the next big step as a cultural organization that has an impact on how people experience design, and over the next ten years, want DMoC to become much more visible as a destination for locals and visitors alike. The people who live here have endless potential, and because of that, the city is marked by new beginnings and constant evolution.

As an outdoor venue, The Franklin’s location is essential to its identity and purpose. East Garfield Park is a primarily Black, working-class neighborhood, and because of its low rents many artists have begun to move there. Soto and Sullivan see The Franklin as a way for artists to engage with East Garfield Park residents and build community. As a result, they’ve created a unique space that doesn’t exist within the typical confines of the art world. In Chicago, the museum is a foundational institution, often acting as a place of refuge within a city that has stymied the growth and progress of the African American community through racist housing policies and police conduct. “We weren’t started by anybody downtown; we were started by ordinary folks,” Burroughs shared.

Visitors can explore the topics of genocide and human rights through exhibits that range from interactive holograms and virtual reality experiences to the Zev & Shifra Karkomi Holocaust Exhibition, which details the lives of survivors before, during and after the war. But there are countless institutions dotting the 230 square miles that make up the city. Housed in old manufacturing buildings and army warehouses, converted boarding houses and backyards, these centers of art and culture enrich the lives of all Chicagoans. Opening and diversifying the scope led to the new title, acknowledging that great ideas could come from sources who were not necessarily men or from the Western world. It is unclear what kind of lasting impact the original “Great Ideas” series had on American values, but it’s earned a distinguished place in the advertising pantheon. So it’s not surprising that Woodford and the Design Museum staff had no trouble assembling a lot of design talent happy to contribute to this effort.

The rebrand of DMoC went as smooth as any project that I’ve been a part of. One of the only challenges was the difficult task of leaving so much great work on the cutting-room floor. Ultimately we had to make tough decisions to ensure that the final product was focused, memorable and accurately represented our mission. It was a challenging but rewarding process, and I’m thrilled with the result. Sign up to unlock our digital magazines and also receive the latest news, events, offers and partner promotions.
While Chicago’s entertainment and cultural scene normally hits critical mass during the summer months, the unprecedented number of design shows and exhibitions opening after Memorial Day in 2014 demand a calendar unto itself. You can see bright, colorful murals by walking through the streets of Pilsen, but there's even more amazing art on display at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Harrison Park. One of the largest Latinx cultural organizations in the U.S., exhibitions draw from a permanent collection of more than 10,000 works, highlighting the creativity of artists on both sides of the border. Start with the permanent exhibit "Nuestra Historias," which includes everything from 18th century religious paintings to a tricked-out lawn mower.
It impacts our worlds deeply, affecting everything from our quality of life to our interactions with our neighbors. Bringing design to a relatable, human level allows us all to better understand the power of design and to utilize that power to fundamentally improve the human condition. “The national and international focus of the sports world on Thursday night is going to be on the NFL draft and, in particular, the No. 1 draft pick — and the Bears own the No. 1 pick. By announcing the stadium plan the day before, it will get a tremendous amount of attention locally and also nationally and internationally,” Ganis said. Murphy said the Bears’ new financing plan assumes more “conservative hotel tax growth” and “protects the city from unexpected drops” in hotel revenue.

It is an integral tool that connects communities and creates equity, which is why we think it’s so important to provide Chicago’s residents and visitors with a free and accessible museum focused on design. With Mayor Brandon Johnson as lead blocker, the Bears on Wednesday launched their hurry-up offense to win legislative approval of their $4.7 billion plan to build a domed lakefront stadium during the final month of the Illinois General Assembly’s spring session. "As you noticed here, the plan is to keep the historical columns from Soldier Field to make that part of this development to make it one museum campus," Bears CEO/President Kevin Warren said during a visual presentation of the renderings. "What happens here is the additional open and green space. This will have 14 acres of athletic fields, a recreational park to allow, as I mentioned earlier, for youth to be able to come together and do things in a productive manner." Ben Schulman is the editor of the design section of Newcity and co-host of “A Lot You Got to Holler,” the Newcity podcast on design, architecture and urbanism. His work with Newcity is one of many ventures he engages in to communicate the value of design and cities.
The center offers exhibitions, artists talks, classes, professional development opportunities, and residency programs. Their commitment to Chicago is evident in both the artists they feature—the recent exhibition Artists Run Chicago 2.0 celebrated the work of 50 artist-run spaces and organizations that fuel the city’s independent art scene—and in how they strive to keep their doors open to all residents. When the pandemic forced them to move their programming online this past spring, Hyde Park Art Center made all of their spring programs a contribute-what-you-can fee model. And while not exclusively focusing on Chicago, it’s the hometown connection that often makes the Design Museum’s mission most compelling.
In 2014, after two years of successful itinerant programming, more than 500 backers supported a Kickstarter campaign to provide funding for the museum to operate year-round. Beginning with a single staff member, the museum now mounts at least 2 exhibitions per year, has hosted hundreds of public programs, and engaged with more than 175,000 visitors. Stop scrolling through Instagram and check out some of the amazing shots that line the walls of the Museum of Contemporary Photography. Founded by Columbia College Chicago, the Loop-based gallery hosts multiple shows each year, including groundbreaking new work made by artists around the globe as well as archival prints from the institution's archives. It doesn't take long to see everything on display in this relatively small museum, which makes it a perfect place to experience a bit of culture during your lunch break, or between checking out all the other great museums, galleries and things to do in Chicago. The building itself is located in Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood and stretches across an entire city block.
I want to be clear and I want them to win and I want them to have a great place to play,” Pritzker said at an unrelated news conference on Wednesday. That will be a heavy lift, even with support from union leaders salivating at the promise of 43,000 construction jobs generated by the domed lakefront stadium alone. Even with the $2 billion contribution from the Bears, a $900 million funding gap would still need to be filled just to build and finance the stadium designed by David Manica, architect of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Of the estimated $4.7 billion for the entire project, $3.22 billion is for the stadium alone.
"CHGO DSGN is an exhibition that is inspired by the ideas of our times; it represents a cross section of what I believe is going on in design right now," says Valicenti, founder and design director at Thirst/3st. The show’s exacting and eclectic selection represents the established and up-and-coming across disciplines, while providing space for an array of experimental and theoretical proposals. Among the largest institutions in the world dedicated to art created post-1950, the Museum of Contemporary Art is best known for hosting major touring exhibitions, including past exhibitions celebrating luminaries like Virgil Abloh, David Bowie and Takashi Murakami. Throughout the MCA's galleries, you'll also find exhibits dedicated to rising local and international artists (including the museum's ongoing Chicago Works series). Once you're finished strolling through the galleries, make sure to exit through the well-curated gift shop.
By day, it is a sturdy stadium coat engineered with wind- and water-resistant materials. By night, a lower portion folds out into a kind of sleeping bag, and the sleeves roll up to act as a pillow. Detroit companies such as Carhartt, General Motors, Thinsulate and Steelcase donated the fabrics. The project evolved into the nonprofit organization, The Empowerment Plan, led by Scott. Have you ever passed by a beautiful home, and wished you could just peek inside?
This land was forcibly purchased after more than two years of open warfare that built on decades of violent encroachment, and after the defeat of a pan-Indian movement to keep settlers out of the Great Lakes region at the Treaty of Chicago in 1821. Today, Illinois is still home to more than 75,000 tribal members, including Ho-Chunk, Miami, Inoka, Menominee, Sac, Fox, and their descendants. Chicagoland, specifically and proudly, hosts one of the largest and most diverse urban Native communities in the U.S. We would recommend you allot approximately 30–40 minutes to visit the gallery. If you’re a “zip through” visitor, clearly less, and if you’re a “read it all” visitor, probably a little bit more.

The tiny (and free) Chicago Design Museum displays incredibly creative, ever-changing exhibits on everything from street art to architecture to urban planning. Their mission is to showcase the power of design by highlighting the influence it has on our everyday lives. Recent exhibitions have included paper arts from around the world, games in our modern culture, and a showcase on the parallels between design and music featuring national musicians. On any given day at the Chicago Cultural Center, you might find a free classical concert being performed, an art exhibition on display in one of the building’s many galleries or tourists marveling at the world’s largest stained glass Tiffany dome. Don’t worry about paying for admission—nearly everything that happens in this building is free and open to the public. A local, non-profit cultural institution, Design Museum of Chicago strives to meet people where they are, facilitating conversations around design comprised of a variety of voices, backgrounds, and viewpoints.

It’s a small but mighty museum, regularly carrying the work of local photographers. The museum’s Midwest Photographers Project is a decades-long collection that cycles through new and established regional photographers, each examining a different social experience, from the slums of Mumbai to electronics and teens. Open since 1961, this Hyde Park cultural hub is the oldest independent African American museum in the country, housing documents and artifacts from the lives of movers and shakers like activist Ida B. Wells and poet Langston Hughes, plus a collection of vibrant African American art. You'll even find Chance the Rapper's Grammy award for best rap album on display.

After ten years of successful exhibitions, strong momentum in the community and a base of support galvanized for DMoC, we are ready to take our brand to the next level. We spent considerable time thinking about what we stand for and why we matter. In short, we exist to elevate the importance of design in our lives and help people see design, in all its manifestations, in entirely new ways. That led us to rethinking our visual identity and brand expression, which will propel us over the next decade and beyond. You don’t have to be pre-med to appreciate the strange assortment of surgery-related artifacts at this unusual museum.

Located in the backyard of Lecturer Edra Soto (MFA 2000) and Dan Sullivan’s home in East Garfield Park, The Franklin is an artist-run project space. It began in 2012 with an installation called Living by Example, where Sullivan and Soto designed and built a shed to house work from their personal collection. The shed has remained, acting as an exhibition space for countless artists’ work over the past eight years. “After graduating from SAIC, I found support in the artist-run community here in Chicago. It was a vibrant and engaging scene that gave me a sense of community and agency,” Soto shared. The best design comes from people with an intuitive understanding of the brand and its strategic mission.
Time, referenced both literally and figuratively throughout, plays a central role, and the viewing experience is what one makes it. However, we’d recommend using a 3rd party app, like SpotHero, Parking Panda, or Park Chicago to get the best deal. The Next Voices Embodied ExhibitionJoin us staring in July for the next Voices Embodied exhibition, in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Wellness Center, highlighting a relationship between disability and community. We are told that a new domed stadium on protected lakefront land will make Chicago a great city. We are already a great city — in large part due to our protected lakefront,” the group said in its statement. The advocacy group issued a list of concerns, including a lack of community involvement, questions about the veracity of rosy economic impact estimates and, of course, the use of lakefront property.
This new membership program connects you to your community, rewards you with goodies, and invites you to exclusive events and opportunities. They “might even have to wear sunglasses” while looking up through the translucent roof, a design similar to the roof at SoFi Stadium, or through the “clear glass” walls at the lakefront and Chicago’s iconic skyline. Every year that we wait, it’s $150 [million] to $250 million of increased costs that ultimately we’ll have to figure out.
A historic church has been transformed into a sprawling arts campus in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. Along with music venues and art studios, there’s also plenty of gallery space for a rotating array of art exhibitions. Epiphany Center for the Arts collaborates with local artists, curators, and galleries to bring together can’t-miss exhibits across eight intimate galleries, plus artist talks, classes, and a residency program.

SS Majestic was sold after a few years of service in 1994, while SS Atlantic held on for a few more years before being sold in 1997. The new owner brought new changes to the company, when they introduced StarShip Oceanic when it joined Premier Cruise Line in 1985.
Who Owned the Big Red Boat?
In 1977 he took his young family to Walt Disney World for the first time and suddenly that Disney magic he experienced as a child was rekindled. Since then Gary and his wife Carol have enjoyed about 70 trips to Walt Disney World, 11 trips to Disneyland and 11 Disney Cruises. Rob and Kathy must have sailed on one of the last of the Disney themed cruises since the deal between Premier and Disney ended in late 1993 and was not renewed. Disney reportedly had discussions with both Carnival and Royal Caribbean lines, hoping they could replace Premier, but neither seemed to be interested. On May 3, 1994 Disney announced that they would be starting their own cruise line. The remaining ships in fleet, Big Red Boat I, Rembrandt, SS SeaBreeze, and Big Red Boat III were immediately ordered to stop sailing, with some of the ships offloading everything in the port where seized.

The memories created during it’s heyday still bring smiles to the faces of those who were fortunate enough to embark on it’s deck. From the excitement of seeing beloved Disney characters to the thrill of cruising through tropical paradises, the Big Red Boat provided a unique experience that will never be forgotten. "I don't think it ever would have been as big as it is today if they had not been able to collaborate with Disney," he said about Hermansen and Bruce Nierenberg.

A few of the ships were laid up in Freeport, Bahamas and others were left elsewhere. The SS SeaBreeze ended up capsizing and sinking within a few months of the closure. Premier Cruise Lines was created in 1983 when cruise lines were fighting for attention. This line was inspired by two cruise veterans, Bruce Nierenberg and Bjornar Hermansen, who had a vision of what it would take to be successful. They weren’t about building the biggest and most impressive ships but were instead identifying what their clientele would be interested in to gain their loyalty. A storied line with roots that go back to the 1800s, this three-ship brand is perhaps best known for its 2,695-passenger flagship, Queen Mary 2.
The Environmental Impact of Scrapping the Big Red Boat and Other Decommissioned Ships.
Premier purchased the ship in 1985 and set about the task of placing into service the first cruise ship that specifically targeted families with young children. Premier had reached a character licensing agreement with Disney so that they could use Disney characters to lure families on board. Simultaneously, the level of service on The Big Red Boat began to decline, an issue that caused Disney concern over their association with this company, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the partnership. In 1993, Disney began plans to create its own fleet of ships and formally terminated their agreement with Premier. Premier attempted to save the line, first by replacing Disney characters with Looney Tunes characters and then by diversifying their destinations to try to capture the European cruise market.
